We want to congratulate our very own postdoctoral associate, Dr. Bo Yang, on being published in ESRI’s education blog as well as being one of three speakers for the “Teaching with Drones” webinar. Dr. Yang is the UAV research lead for the NSF Smithsonian Eelgrass project and collaborates on a variety of our other projects.

As drone systems for data capture grows, training on this data collection technique has proven needed. Dr. Yang has developed an open-access training course that provides a thorough overview covering drone basics, in-flight operation, autonomous mapping, image processing techniques, and a self-study guide for assistance in obtaining a Part 107 license which is necessary for becoming a pilot-in-command of drone systems.

Further research for the NSF Smithsonian project is expected to be continued this summer.
