The nation’s first GeoBus from Citizen Science GIS at University of Central Florida is driven by ideas and community partnerships. We are pleased to announce that IBM will serve as one of our Bronze Level Sponsors of GeoBus. The generous monetary donation from IBM will allow for the purchase of additional technology solutions for GeoBus as it inspires the next generation of scientists in K-12 schools across Florida. “GeoBus is a technology-focused partnership and it is fitting that our first partner is one of the world’s most iconic technology brands. IBM supports STEAM education across the globe, and to have their investment in GeoBus is exciting. The commitment from IBM allows us to enrich and expand our statewide plans for GeoBus in Florida,” said Timothy L. Hawthorne, GeoBus Founding Director.
IBM and GeoBus have similar goals to support technology education. Both have 1) a commitment to education and workforce development; 2) a focus on interactive, problem-based lessons through STEM activities including several geography-focused lessons on the IBM Teachers Try Science site; and 3) a commitment to educating the public about disaster relief and recovery efforts. As part of the partnership, GeoBus teachers will also be trained in the use of IBM’s Teacher Advisor with Watson resources.
“GeoBus is about connecting people with technology. People are the greatest assets at both IBM and GeoBus. We are thrilled to have innovative, technology leaders at IBM invest in the future of science through GeoBus, and we are eager to have IBM staff members volunteer their time as GeoBus mentors in future K-12 school stops,” said Hawthorne. GeoBus is in development, and expects to begin driving geospatial technology education in Florida beginning in 2019 with public and private partnerships.
About GeoBus: The nation’s first GeoBus is a truly unique education initiative we are building across all of Florida, hosted at UCF, to drive geospatial technology education and outreach to the community. The GeoBus is a 40-foot city bus retrofitted with an interior equipped with in-demand technologies for an immersive STEAM education learning experience. Our focus is to engage with over 15,000 youth annually in K-12 STEAM programs and Title 1 schools across the state, and eventually build a GeoBus Network across the country. We want to inspire youth with maps, apps and drones.
