2022 Citizen Science GIS REU & RET Keynote Speaker: Dr. Amanda Rees

Dr. Amanda Rees has recently retired from Columbus State University (2021). In 2010, she established and subsequently coordinated the Columbus Community Geography Center (CCGC) at CSU. The CCGC connects community organizations who have a problem to solve with geographers who develop class-based projects to support each organization’s mission. Students have worked with organizations as varied as a regional food bank, Trees Columbus, the Columbus Food Oasis, urban development NGOs, Historic Columbus, several rural Chambers of Commerce, Historic Preservation, and tourism organizations such as White Water Express. While facilitating over 25 community geography projects, she has worked to create a pedagogy (philosophy and practice of teaching) that supports collaboration both amongst students, and between students and community partners. Using Team-Based Learning, students apply geographical concepts to solve problems in a collaborative context.
