Kayla Toohy

Graduate Research Assistant

Kayla Toohy is a third year doctoral student in the Sociology department at the University of Central Florida. Her research interests include Geographic Information Science (GIS), homicide, violent crime, and more recently, environmental studies of sense of place and place attachment. Toohy’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice as well as a Master’s of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Memphis in 2016 and 2018 respectively. In addition to her graduate degree, she also completed a graduate certificate in GIS at the University of Memphis in 2018.

Toohy joined Citizen Science GIS in the spring semester of 2020 as a research assistant, specifically focusing on work related to the Coastal Connections project regarding restoration efforts being made within the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) on the east coast of Florida. Her responsibilities include coordinating members of the Coastal Connections team in writing a publication utilizing the data collected for this project as well as aiding in the various ongoing efforts of the Maps, Apps, and Drones Tour.
