Overwhelming Demand for Citizen Science GIS: Thank You!

We are humbled by the overwhelming response to our NSF Citizen Science GIS summer research program.  It’s clear that hundreds of students around the U.S. are passionate about community-based scholarship in international settings.  Our 2017 priority application deadline has now passed.  For us as an REU team, today begins an exciting part of our journey.  We will read through all of the applications, feeling student passions jump off the pages of their essays as we read their inspiring stories and aspirations for the future! We’ll be providing additional updates on social media, especially on Facebook, so please check us out on the web and share on social media. We challenge each of you to share our work and invite your colleagues, professors, and friends to like our pages on Facebook and Twitter. We want each of you to bring at least 50 friends to our Facebook and Twitter pages.  Can you help spread the word?  The movement for more effective and reflective community-based research begins with you and sharing with #citizensciencegis.

It will take some time to select our 8 international community scholars for the summer of 2017 to join our research family, and I wanted to quickly let you know our review plan.  Dr. Visaggi and I will discuss the applicants and rank our short list of applicants down to no more than 20-25 candidates in the next two weeks.  We will email those candidates for availability for Skype interviews with both of us.  Those interviews will occur sometime in early March.  We will then rank our final 8 and identify a ranked alternate list.  By mid-March we will extend offers to the initial 8 finalists.  Those finalists will have 1 week to accept or decline our offer to join the REU. In the event a finalist does not accept our offer to join the REU, we will move to the ranked alternate list.We hope this provides some clarity to the application review process.  Again, we thank you for the interest in our program and for taking the time to fill out our application.  Now we are off to read about the passions of our applicants.  It is truly our honor to do so!With our best,Dr. Timothy Hawthorne
