The beginning of 2020 for CitizenScienceGIS marks the start of many new adventures: The soon unveiling of our GeoBus, continuation of the Maps, Apps, & Drones tour, and another year of drone mapping along the US West Coast.

This trip, on January 24th, to the Indian River Lagoon in East Florida had the purpose of preparing our new undergraduate researchers for their summer fieldwork in California, Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. It also gave us the opportunity to test new equipment, such as our new parrot bluegrass drone, used for capturing NDVI imagery.

We first went over proper drone assembly for both the DJI Phantom 4 Pro and Parrot Bluegrass drones. Then, each team member learned basic flight controls and maneuvers. We obtained some great mapped products, drone footage, and experience. Throughout the next few months, we will continue planning and training for our summer eelgrass mapping expedition.

Keep up with all of our exciting adventures by following us on social media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
